In this video podcast, Dr. Oren Shriki, a science teacher at the Israel Arts and Sciences Academy, speaks about Intel’s International Science and Engineering Fair, taking place in Atlanta, May 11-16. (As excitement builds toward the event’s opening, you can follow along on a dedicated Intel ISEF blog.)

Many of the best young scientists from around the world will attend, selected through regional science fairs for a wide range of skills, from identifying and addressing important scientific challenges or questions to using organized and logical thought to reach conclusions. The participants in Intel ISEF are very likely to be tomorrow’s leaders in technology, medicine and health, agriculture, environmental science and engineering.

During Intel ISEF, their work will be judged by professional scientists who will look for gifted communicators with excellent foundational understanding in specific research and the scientific process.

No matter what the judges decide, however, participants in the annual event will benefit from meeting their peers from around the world, hearing from Nobel laureates and scientists involved in the same kinds of research as theirs, and also creating lasting memories, like those found on the blog of 2004 ISEF alum (and member of a Fourth Award-winning team) Jayson Reggie Obos.

Here’s more information about the science fair as well as a quick look at recent ISEF events, including the 2007 Intel ISEF in Albuquerque, N.M.

The Intel Science Talent Search culminates in Washington, D.C. this weekend. The high school science projects cover areas like engineering, math, physics, medicine and health, environmental science, zoology, and others. The research these students have engaged in is astonishing. Many projects will result in innovations, inventions, new treatments, and further research as students move on to college and into careers. Forty finalists from high schools around the U.S. will attend the 6-day event where as ten winners will be announced. In this podcast, PodTech’s Jason Lopez talks with two entrants who’ve developed new energy technologies, one which harnesses the electrical energy of microbes.

Meet Professor Pam Matson, dean of the School of Earth Sciences at Stanford University and renowned scientist. Pam is super-excited about the opportunities that ever-increasing levels of private and industrial funding for energy and environmental research offer. How can universities contribute to finding sustainable energy sources and solutions to global warming? And, is there a risk that research at academic institutions, which should be unbiased, is tainted because of industrial funding? Hear what Pam has to say and meet this energetic leader.

The Green Ambassadors program was created to get students learning science, civics and environmental stewardship through experience and action. Today’s lesson provided the group with basic information about biodiesel that they could present to their school board. This field trip is just one step in the process to further their mission of converting dirty diesel school busses into cleaner burning bio-machines.

“The technical hurdles are real but we believe they are surmountable.” During his keynote address at the L.A. Auto Show, General Motors Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner announced that the company has begun work on a Saturn Vue plug-in hybrid production vehicle, as well as other alternative fuel technologies. While no production date was given for the PHEV, Wagoner indicated it was a top priority for the company.

Reporter’s Notes: While specifics were lacking, even mentioning GM’s PHEV plans in public represented a giant change in strategy for Wagoner and the company. No doubt they are feeling the pressure from competitors like Toyota, as well as economic and environmental concerns in the market among consumers, as issues like an over-reliance on foreign oil, rising gas prices, and global warming continue to dominate issues of concern for consumers. Special thanks to Ingrid Lobet, Western bureau chief for National Public Radio’s environmental & science program, Living on Earth, for her assistance in providing audio of this news conference.
