Burning Man is filled with hackers, artists and makers of all walks. We thought we would search out the energy geeks and see how they were utilizing resources out in the middle of nowhere. The obvious, most abundant source of energy in Black Rock City is the Sun. Solar arrays ranged from the milk-crate supported to the 10,000 watt, “could (and did) power a small village” variety. It was great to see electric art cars charging off the sun! Waste Veggie Oil diesel conversions were also a favorite among burners for powering art cars and generators, too. Thanks to Maestro, David and Nick for sharing their desert energy oases with us!

Many people strive for the freedom that working for themselves and freelancing brings. You can work odd hours in your pajamas at home, travel to exotic locales but still be on the job, not have to clock in at an office. After the initial exhilaration of being independent cools a bit, there is something missing — co-workers and the social environment that working for a company can bring. Enter Co-Working. Co-Working is an idea that independent workers still want and need social interaction and structure during working hours. Going stir crazy working in your living room? Can’t stand that Madonna remix album they keep repeating at the cafe? Want to bounce your ideas off some other geeks? Co-Working!

We started our Co-Working experience at The Hat Factory, here in San Francisco. The most unexpected benefit, beside meeting great people, was the ability to separate work time from relax time - not an easy task for a freelancer. Our day schedule looked like this: Get up, go to Hat Factory, work for 6-8 hours, come home, put the computer to sleep, cook dinner, watch a movie… Hey, we didn’t end up working for 12 hours today! We have a sustainable, not-burnt-out life outside our work! Thanks, Co-Working!

Thanks to Brad Neuberg and Chris Messina and Tara Hunt, from Citizen Space, for sitting down with us and explaining how Co-Working got started and what it all means. Get involved in starting your own Co-Working space by connecting to the folks already doing it! Check out the Co-Working Wiki, Blog and E-mail list.

Their goals for Green Acre span from being a green lodging spot for geeks to becoming a community center and arts venue for the increasing number of T-or-C locals.

We got the chance to hang with Wendy and Mikey on our long drive from San Fran to SXSW. A dot-com bust survivor, Ecast is now thriving with over 10,000 digital jukeboxes in bars and nightclubs around the world. We speak with David Schmidt, senior director of advertising product marketing, and Joshua Pollack, product marketing for content, who are technology and music geeks respectively. We find out how Ecast works, how it delivers long-tail content over its network and learn a bit about new interactive advertising models.

Maryam (my wife) and I fed the group burritos and then kicked off the debate. We recorded two hours of this (you can find the first hour here), no demos, so you can run it in the background and listen to it. Special prize (our undying respect) goes to anyone who watches all two hours of this.

I invited four geeks, representing both sides of the OS aisle. First is Fred Davis, co-founder of Wired Magazine. Second is Harry McCracken, editor in chief of PC World. Third is Sam Levin, founder of Stanford Mac User Group, among other Mac things. Fourth is Jeremy Toeman who worked at Sling Media when I first met him.

Maryam (my wife) and I fed the group burritos and then kicked off the debate. We recorded two hours of this (this segment is the first hour — second installment here), no demos, so you can run it in the background and listen to it. Special prize (our undying respect) goes to anyone who watches all two hours of this.

What happens when we get a bunch of geeks get together on a Friday afternoon in London? The “Pissed as Newts” tour! Here’s a small part of the tour (we visited five pubs). You get to watch Hugh Macleod draw one of his famous little drawings on the backs of business cards for his blog at www.gapingvoid.com. In the background are about 20 London geeks. The rest of the tour? It was off the record.

In the second half of the video, we speak with Hugh during a London taxi ride — you’ll also meet software developer Sarah Blow, founder of Girl Geek Dinners — where we have a fun conversation.
