Yet, the lack of an ECM standard has presented a huge challenge: How can content-enabled applications access and manage content among disparate systems?

To solve this problem, EMC, IBM, and Microsoft are joining forces to lead the drive for the Content Management Interoperability Services (CMIS) standard for repository access. This new standard will offer organizations the flexibility they need to get more from their enterprise content management systems. Download this episode to hear Razmik Abnous, CTO, Content Management and Archiving, EMC Corporation share his insight on CMIS.

With Internet bandwidth demand doubling each year, broadcast media, IPTV, and new user-generated YouTube-style video are culprits exacerbating the problem. This is where <a href="http://www.brin.com/"Broadcast International and their new CodecSys offering can help reduce bandwidth for video applications by 50% or more, including High Definition (HD).

For the lay person, digital video is created with a video codec that encodes and compresses a stream of information. There are numerous codecs, each offering its own benefit and/or tradeoffs for visual or audio quality and file size.

Unlike traditional systems that force a single codec, CodecSys runs each frame of video past a collection of the codecs and determines which codec is best for that particular frame or series of frames. Exploiting attributes of multiple codecs, CodecSys can reduce bandwidth needs by 50-75%. Since it’s a software solution, new codecs can easily be incorporated into the system.

Broadcast International CEO Rod Tiede talks with Brad Baldwin about CodecSys and their recent demo with IBM at the 2007 IBC Expo in Amsterdam on the new BladeCenter QS20 “Cell Blade”.

Wrapping up the episodes from Microsoft TechEd IT Forum in Barcelona, James and I talk about the discussions and announcements at the event. First, James comments on the seeming maturity that both the attendees and Microsoft itself has after all these years of TechEd. Then we get ask if virtualization will avoid the usual zero-sum battle that every other technology goes through - the answer is probably obvious. Moving onto the broader industry, we comment on the long relationship between IBM and Microsoft, feeling now that IBM is in a pulling back phase. Finally, we wrap-up with some PowerShell talk and comment on the role of open source - or lack thereof - in all of this.

The discuss the role of AR, both on the side of the analyst and executives, some examples of different styles and idiosyncrasies of both analysts and execs, and then talk about the changing nature of analysts. Finally, by way of a question from James on IBM seeming to be more interested in conversations than “transactions” (helping IBM make money directly with increased sales) they discuss the short of ROI on analysts for companies.

You’ve heard lots of old-time industry stories in our previous two conversations with Tom Rolander who was Gary Kildall’s best friend and operating system pioneer at Digital Research. But now let’s take a walking tour around Pacific Grove where you get a look at the places that now are historical memories. There are no plaques. No statues. Just Tom’s memories and we walk around Pacific Grove talking about what used to be the world’s top personal computer operating system company.

Sun Microsystems leaped ahead of rivals this week with what it claims is the world’s fastest server microprocessor. Analysts such as Nathan Brookwood from Insight64 were impressed. Sun also said that it would open up all of its business units as standalone profit centers in a bid to attract additional partners using Sun technologies.

Here is Part 1 of Sun’s presentation. Part 2 and Q&A with press and partners coming soon.

- Robert Scoble visits Tom Rolander, a former colleague of Gary Kildall of Digital Research and finds out what happened when IBM tried to license Digital Research’s DR-DOS for its PC. How did Gary Kildall miss out on such a great opportunity?

- Larry Magid finds a solution to recharging mobile devices using an innovative fuel cell power pack from Medis Technologies.
