The Core i7 microprocessor (built on Intel’s Nehalem microarchitecture) represents a major advance in computing to enable chips to handle more data. In this video podcast, Ronak Singhal, a lead architect on Nehalem, says the chip design is an overhaul–the internal core has been changed significantly for added performance, as well as for better energy efficiency.

“We’ve put in features such as Turbo Boost Technology, our integrated power gate, an integrated memory controller, and Hyper-Threading,” he says. The effort took about five years and required thousands of engineers.

“Building this microprocessor brings a lot of people together, like architects, micro architects, the design teams,” commented Rani Borkar, vice president of Intel’s Digital Enterprise Group. “As you get into the development phases, working with the process technology, it’s a mind-boggling effort that requires a lot of teamwork across the board.”

This video takes you into Intel’s labs to meet some of the researchers behind the Core i7.

Join BearingPoint Managing Director, Brian Hart, as he explores the importance of an adequate risk and performance platform and how it can help companies deal with the credit crisis. Given the scope, depth, and length of this crisis, our clients are clearly being forced to re-examine how they conduct business. The issues that we see are the most prevalent are the need to access capital, how to fund a balance sheet, earnings, acquisitions and dispositions, government intervention, and most importantly- the speculation around change. When an organization deals with these issues on a day-to-day basis, like we see happening now, we know we’ve entered crisis mode. This has many companies wondering what went wrong and how can we better equip ourselves for the future?

The single most important thing that needs to be addressed is the realization of how much capital is being used at a given time. Most people don’t realize how much capital they’re using because of their lack of transparency, and when they finally realize it, it’s too late. To come out of this, we’re asking people to watch very closely how much capital they are spending and to cut any unnecessary costs. This can be done by acknowledging the need for better data management and risk capabilities. BearingPoint has addressed this with a seven point analytical strategy that can assist clients with understanding what changes they need to make. In the podcast, you will hear important points, such as how to manage data, estimate risk, change current business processes and how to implement an integrated risk and performance framework.

Clearly this crisis has exposed a number of weaknesses in risk management across the sector. Most organizations still have basic issues around risk and transparency. This podcast addresses key areas that are lacking in the risk management sector; such as understanding your risks, what risks are making you money and how effectively your trading machine is working? There are many changes that need to be made across the entire financial services sector, and the key points that are addressed in the podcast can help you itemize an action plan to take the appropriate measures to ensure future success.

Join BearingPoint Managing Director Brian Hart to explore the seven steps to more effective performance and risk management. As a result of the recent credit crisis, organizations are faced with a challenge of making the best use of a very constrained balance sheet. BearingPoint has created a seven-step methodology to help organizations address these issues, and position their companies to deliver superior results.

Through the seven steps that have been outlined, you will identify ways to not only examine your daily business, but how to change it. The challenge with financial institutions today is that information is produced in silos. With all this information being spread around, it is hard for a manager to know what is going on and when there is a problem that needs to be dealt with. Our proven methodology focuses on the importance of putting information in the hands of the deal maker and how to change the incentive structure. Above everything else, an organization must learn how to implement a comprehensive integrated performance and risk management framework. This framework is vital for the success of one’s organization.

In a period of sharply reduced balance sheet allocations, certain businesses have reached a critical point where information and tools are required if they are to compete effectively. Organizations can better prepare themselves to achieve advantageous returns by formulating a comprehensive risk and performance strategy. A strategy similar to that outlined herein can help management to dramatically reduce the capital your organization consumes while conversely demonstrating superior returns.

In this video podcast straight from Intel’s Spring IDF in Shanghai, the spotlight is on the keynote demos that showed power and performance in newer, smaller and more innovative form factors, many powered by the Intel’s Atom processor. Many of the demonstrations focused on mobility, and they all provided an exciting look at some of the technologies that are just around the corner.

Dr. Ren Ng, president and CEO of Refocus Imaging, led a demo of his company’s light field cameras, which record the full light field as it enters the camera, ultimately extending the capabilities of conventional digital cameras and “turning camera hardware into software.” Ng explains that by doing this, light field cameras “bring the economics and power of Moore’s Law to the camera system.” (snapshots from their Web site illustrate the demo, which they re-created live, on stage at IDF!).

Also on hand was Dr. Mendel Rosenblum, co-founder and chief scientist at VMware. He shared the stage with Intel Senior Vice President and General Manager, Digital Enterprise Group, Pat Gelsinger, to demonstrate a flex migration across four generations of hardware as well as the value of the deep collaboration between Intel and VMware.

There was a live demo by Classmate PC, following the news-making announcement of the new, second generation classmate (”featuring a 9-inch LCD screen, 6-cell battery, 512MB memory, a 30GB hard disk drive and a built-in webcam“), the unveiling of Intel’s Tukwila Itanium processor (“Two billion transistors in one processor”), and a mobility-focused Asianux demoonstration of the breadth of Moblin Usage, including a new way to play video from the Web and a new way to order Chinese food.

A Montevina demo was noteworthy after Intel Senior Vice President and General Manager of Intel’s Mobility Group, Dadi Perlmutter, revealed that Intel’s next generation mobile platform, Montevina, will provide twice the 3D processing power of any current integrated solution.

Demos showcasing Neusoft driver assistance, Fuwa robot, Adobe Air, Sobey real-time rendering and MID & mobile designs rounded out the event.

Join BearingPoint managing director Brian Hart to explore trading performance and risk management, and what has been learned from the recent credit crisis. The recent credit crisis has demonstrated to companies that there were certain capabilities they were lacking in managing their business effectively. BearingPoint has identified some critical ways for companies to better prepare for these types of events in the future.

The key elements that have been identified in the midst of the recent turmoil are the importance of a single, integrated trade performance and risk management platform. Most companies have invested considerably in separate financial, risk management and trading systems. The challenge, however, is the need to pull information from a variety of sources into a single, cohesive reporting framework that blends risk and performance insights. This framework can then provide a view of the business that is consistent with how traders and management think of it.

In addition to implementing an integrated performance, it is essential to eliminate unnecessary costs in risk management by eliminating significant administrative activity, such as spending 20% of company time troubleshooting. By freeing up these resources, management can focus on their business, as opposed to managing the process of creating information.

Crises such as this are nothing new to the financial world. By understanding the importance of an integrated platform and the other key capabilities that are essential to success, a financial institution can ensure they are better prepared for any obstacles they face in the future.

In many countries in the developing world, cooking is a role assigned to women who tend open fires, sometimes inside their homes. In Guatemala, the respiratory illnesses, eye infections and severe burns that come from this reality seemed eminently avoidable to Donald O’Neal. With the intent of finding a safer way to cook, O’Neal developed the ONIL stove, using strong, inexpensive ceramic lining and a steel chimney, it is designed to suit the needs of traditional Guatemalan cooking, and for its impressive results — it saves 70 percent of the wood usually used for cooking, emits only 1/20th of the carbon monoxide and protects families from burns and other maladies associated with open fires and smoke — O’Neal was recognized as a 2007 Health Award Laureate at The Tech Museum Awards.

O’Neal is vice president of HELPS International, a nonprofit organization that works with individuals and governments to improve drinking water quality, medical care, education, housing, agricultural and economic development in what they call an integrated poverty reduction program.

He spoke with PodTech for this video podcast at The Tech Museum, where he was on hand to acknowledge HELPS International’s selection as one of five Swanson Foundation Health laureates.

Nancy Bhagat is the vice president for the sales and marketing group and director of integrated marketing at Intel. She joined MarketingVoices’ Jennifer Jones a little background on the Upload Lounge that Intel provided for the first time this past year at the Fall IDF. Every year for the past ten years in San Francisco, Intel has convened its Fall developer forum, and as the chip giant continues to address integrated computing environments, the Upload Lounge was a physical acknowledgment of the significance that social media messaging is taking on. Bhagat says that, at least at Intel, the executive team is on board when it comes to implementing social media strategy — a reality that has allowed her to re-brand her own team as an “integrated marketing” department. The marketing “mix” that Bhagat is excited to foster includes traditional media as well as the elaborate peer-oriented network that developers around the world already rely on for so much information and support. Looking ahead, Bhagat says that the measurement for new efforts online will stress engagement through increasingly complex messaging. On the marketing budget side, Bhagat is expecting that Intel will continue to stay out front in terms of stressing innovation in online and social media marketing efforts.

In what Intel called the “first ever software keynote address,” Intel Vice President and General Manager of the Software and Solutions Group Renee James kicked off Day 3 of the Fall IDF in San Francisco.

James, who manages the global network of teams that interact with all of the software companies that do business with Intel, spoke about, “Where Innovation Happens: Engaging with Intel Software Communities.”

In this podcast, we hear how the “community” aspect turns out to be key, as the relationships James oversees encompass the entire product lifecycle from early planning all the way through to sales and marketing. James devoted some time during the keynote to a few of those communities, including Moblin.org, a new community site that hosts the Mobile & Internet Linux Project, an “umbrella, open source project” for mobile Internet devices (MID). Another community, www.lesswatts.org, is a developer community for reducing power consumption that’s supported by Oracle (the site explains that, rather than being “about marketing,” it’s about “creating a community around saving power on Linux, bringing developers, users, and sysadmins together to share software, optimizations, and tips and tricks.” There’s also a global developer relations group, in addition to engineering and product teams.

James also pointed to whatif.intel.com, an Intel initiative that encourages communities to weigh in on the software development process, providing resources like, at the moment, an Integrated Debugger for Java/JNI Environments, for example.

In addition to supporting such a diverse array of global communities, James also oversees Intel Solution Services, Intel’s worldwide professional services organization.

At Intel, James was the product and program manager for the first software video codecs (Indeo), and was a member of the team developing Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) for the unification of Unix on Intel Architecture.

Keynotes from two Intel executives — David (Dadi) Perlmutter and Anand Chandrasekher — kicked off Day 2 at Intel’s Fall IDF in San Francisco. First up, Dadi Perlmutter, Intel senior vice president and general manager of the Mobility Group. He covered the latest trends in mobile computing, touching on the key elements for mobility — performance, battery life, form factor and wireless communications. Mobile WiMAX will play a big role in wireless networking connectivity, as he explains in this keynote podcast.

In other news, Intel will launch Santa Rosa Refresh in January 2008. It’s an update to Intel Centrino processor technology that includes the next-gen 45nm high-k mobile processor (codenamed Penryn).

Perlmutter also showed the next generation Montevina processor technology that is set to roll out in mid-2008, which includes the Penryn mobile processor and the next-generation chipset with DDR3 memory support. This is notable for being Intel’s first Centrino processor for notebooks to offer the option of integrated Wi-Fi, WiMAX wireless technologies for greater wireless broadband access.

Anand Chandrasekher, Intel senior vice president and general manager of the Ultra Mobility Group, discussed the personal mobile Internet, and Intel’s “silicon roadmap” that will deliver radical reductions in power requirements and package sizes. He also announced a range of leading industry players working with Intel to establish the MID and ultra-mobile PC (UMPC) categories. In a talk entitled, “Unleashing the Internet Experience,” he also covered the upcoming Intel Menlow platform (including a new processor, codenamed Silverthorne - lots of detail can be found on John Spooner’s blog), and the Intel “Moorestown” platform — System on Chip plus a Communications Hub.

The talk also amounted to a check-in after last April’s announcement at IDF Beijing of the MID Innovation alliance with Asus, BenQ, Compal, Elektrobit, HTC, Inventec and Quanta. Chandrasekher was able to show working prototypes from many of the partner companies, emphasizing the significant progress that’s been made over the past six months.

Also announced were strategic collaborations for MID and UMPC efforts — a step forward for Intel’s “Full Internet in Your Pocket” vision.

And the keynote included what Intel billed as the “world’s first demonstration of Adobe AIR Application on Intel Menlow-based platform” — designed to extend the reach of rich Internet applications.

Gordon E. Moore, Intel retired chairman and CEO (and chairman emeritus of the board) spoke with Moira Gunn onstage at the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco, in an interview that Intel called a “fireside chat.”

In this segment, find out whether or not you owe your workplace set-up to Moore and Intel (hint: you probably do). Also, was “Intel” ever the hame of a motel company in the Midwest?

The conversation covered a full career, from a time before semiconductors, when the very notion of integrated circuits was new — and controversial. Since then, of course, not only has Moore been on the winning side of the technology, but his name has become synomymous with the notion that the technology of the chip is on an aggressive development track — “Moore’s Law” has guided and challenged the chip industry for more than 30 years. (Asked if he regrets that name, he says, “I guess I don’t - now.”)

An End to Moore’s Law?
Every year sees speculation about a possible end to Moore’s Law. What does Moore, himself say (this year)? The answer is in this podcast. The physical world is subject to limiting factors, and Moore predicts that sometime in the foreseeable future, limits will be reached in the business of chip-making. However, Moore says he’s still impressed at how well the industry has extended the technologies, so far.

Moore easily recalls a time before the name Silicon Valley applied to the high-tech corridor south of San Francisco, but he was also remembers a time before the now-ubiquitous staple of office life worldwide. Cubicles. You may not like your cubicle much, but according to Moore, they came about in an attempt to keep the office from looking like a prison. Besides, he says, he still has the biggest cubicle at Intel.

Gordon Moore co-founded Intel in 1968.

Paul Otellini looked back on 40 years of innovation at Intel, outlined the company’s three main capabilities (silicon technology, Intel architecture, and market creation), and gave his vision for the future. “Today’s innovations are the basis of future technology,” Otellini said.

Intel has brought out new technology every two years for the last 14 years, putting Intel co-founder Gordon Moore’s “Moore’s Law” into practice. From 45 nanometer technology, Intel has its sights set on 32 nanometer microprocessors for 2009.

Otellini also talked about platforms — the unique combination of microprocessors and chipsets, “tailored for the task at hand.” In the immediate future is Penryn, 45 nanometer dual-core products, the first of which are launching on November 12. Next year, Intel plans to launch Nehalem, a scaleable, multi-core system — 8 cores, each with 2 threads. (Specifics on the launch aren’t available yet — Dean Takahashi reports from IDF that it’ll be released “as soon as it’s ready.”

While discussing the multi-core Larrabee effort, Otellini may have revealed a little more than he intended by indicating it amounted to a move into discrete graphics (he later clarified, according to The Register’s Ashlee Vance: “I said that among the applications for Larrabee one of them is high-end graphics.” Other sources provide a play-by-play of the proceedings.

In addition to adding more cores, Intel is also improving the performance of individual cores, and of power efficiency.

What does the future hold for Intel? The long list of efforts includes pushes in extreme mobility, including ultra-mobile devices with integrated WiMax/Wifi; entertainment — with talk about extreme performance, graphics capability energy efficiency for extreme gaming; problem-solving geared for Enterprise innovations; performance and energy efficiency initiatives including the Climate Savers Initiative & compliance with EPA Energy Star rating program; and creating and reaching new markets, with initiatives to get the 3rd million people connected, through programs like “Intel Teach.”
