The first sister of Facebook

Thursday, September 13th, 2007

You might not know it, but Facebook is a family affair. Randi Zuckerberg is director of market development at Facebook and also a sister of CEO Mark Zuckerberg. I met her for coffee on University Ave., near Facebook’s headquarters, and we had a fun chat about working at Facebook, Randi’s father and how his lessons prepared both of them for running Facebook. Lots more to watch and listen. Oh yeah, Rocky apologizes for getting his camera in some shots and breaking (deliberately) the 180 rule.

VTap brings innovative video search to cell phones

Friday, September 7th, 2007

This is a killer app for your cell phone or iPhone. Why? Getting video onto your cell phone is often impossible. Many sites use Flash only, and don’t provide a format that will work on your cell phone. Well, VTap lets you search for videos like, say, “Ask a Ninja,” and then watch them. If it isn’t in the right format, VTap automatically transcribes it into the right format for your cell phone (or iPhone). This is an awesome app and Murali Aravamudan, CEO of Veveo, talks with me about it and demonstrates it.

Talking storage systems with Sun’s ZFS team

Wednesday, September 5th, 2007

The inventors of Sun Microsystems’ ZFS, Jeff Bonwick, distinguished engineer and storage CTO, and Bill Moore, hardware/software architect, tell me what was behind coming up with ZFS. It’s a file system. That sounds boring, right? But it’s not, since this technology is used in many of the world’s datacenters to keep files safely stored even when bad things happen. The conversation takes us all over the place, since these guys are experts on storage systems. Hard drives and all that. What does ZFS stand for? Zettabyte File System.
