Mad Mojitos at the Ritz: talking tech with CEOs from B5 Media and SmugMug
On weekends I like to walk down to the Half Moon Bay Ritz Carlton resort. It’s nice, as you’ll see (stick around for the bagpiper at the end, he comes down playing his music every Saturday an hour before sunset). Anyway, on a recent weekend Jeremy Wright, CEO and founder of B5 Media, a blogging network, came to visit me. While at the Ritz we met up with Don MacAskill, CEO of SmugMug, a popular photo-sharing service.
So why call this “Mad Mojitos?” Well, before we turned on the camera we had one of the Ritz’ famous Peach Mojitos. It’s a good way to get CEOs to loosen up a little bit and share more about what makes their businesses special.

[…] 1) An interview with a CEO. Sun Microsystems’ Jonathan Schwartz.2) A demo of a new product. JotSpot, which is an Enterprise Wiki service that you might like.3) A creative segment called “Photowalking” where we follow around Thomas Hawk as he makes images. This is actually the first of four segments (the others will be up probably tomorrow — this was more than an hour alone, so had to break it up a bit).4) An audio interview with a geek. Tim Bray, co-creator of XML.5) A language war in my mom’s house at Off-the-Grid. Something fun to spark a conversation.6) Mad mojitos at the Ritz. A conversation with two CEOs on the back deck of the Ritz in Half Moon Bay.7) A tour of Printing for Less. This should be in Business Week.8) SAP’s executive star Shai Agassi talking about business. Robert
just on your conversation with Jeremy re marketshare of Google, I’d note strongly that Google market share is only 60% in the US, it’s a whole lot higher outside of the US in other places(for memory it’s something like 87% in Australia for example). b5’s traffic is far from being only from the US.

[…] Got to say it’s pretty damn good. Scoble avoids the mistakes of many in podcasting by keeping the interviews fairly short and punchy so they don’t drag on (like that horrid podcast he was on with Arrington and Om over at Techcruch the other day). I’ve only watched a few so far (naturally the interview with Jeremy Wright was my first choice) but so far it bides well. […]

[…] Right then, I think it’s time for a geek dinner in the NE. It’s great to see so many cool parties happening, in London and of course in the US , so I think we should get one organised! I will even host it, in the kitchen and provide the grub. We could even go out and find somewhere to eat. (Perhaps with wifi. Actually v unlikely in Hull ). Robert,
I love this format, just candid (alcohol induced) conversations in a relaxed environment. This is so much more valuable than the usual PR-scripted executive interviews.
I think for the next show, you just need to have a few pitchers of mojitos sitting on the tables during the interview. One before the show just isn’t enough to get all the dirt!
Also, please get some more mics – my arm was hurting just watching you

It’s always good to see Jeremy, you guys were having too much fun.
When you go over to visit Smugmug, I’m curious to hear more about their recent announcement of using Amazon’s S3 online storage. It was featured in Forbes in Sept.
