Meeting eBay’s top developer, Eric Billingsley
Eric Billingsley used to design nuclear power plants, but his new job is no less interesting: he is the senior director of eBay’s new research labs. Come along and listen as he tells you what eBay is up to and how he built eBay’s new search engine. He also gives us a demo of the latest stuff from their research labs. It should be said that this stuff is experimental and has not been shipped to eBay yet.

Why can’t ever see the video. The quicktime window opens; I can hear the audio but just a black screen instead of the video.
Any ideas??

Jay, click on the video to enable the control. Scoble’s web designer has improperly implemented the player so that a click is forced.

Fun demos! Thanks for taking us behind the scenes at eBay labs.
I know you’re still getting used to playing around with videoblogs, but just a little feedback: I get kind of bored after 15 minutes and start fast forwarding until I see more demos. (Hopefully Eric doesn’t take that personally!)
I just subscribed via Democracy. Could not be easier!

[…] And today, he interviewed Eric Billingsley today. Eric runs eBay Research Labs. I worked with Eric Billingsley at eBay and you won’t find a nicer guy. He’s also super-smart and I’m excited to see his interview on PodTech. Eric talks about the search engine he built for eBay in 2002. It is a phenomenal application. It is the only search engine in the world that will index an item within seconds. He also provides demos of other cool things his team is working on. eBay Research Labs is very different from some of the other research labs out there. The team works on addressing the problems that the company is facing. It is a very important function for eBay and a very effective way to approach research. This type of research can dramatically change the economics of eBay (through better search results, greater conversion rates on items etc.), but it is unlikely to generate the next eBay itself. […]

Robert,
Please, please, create an audio podcast of these interviews. I like to listen to them during my commute and converting them is becoming a major pain.
Thanks,
Dan
