Remake of Riya comes out as cool way to search for jewelry, handbags, clothes and other items
Take one URL that costs $100,000, 250 servers, a room full of PhD’s, a hot visual search technology (this is the team that built the groundbreaking Riya face detection technology) and add some keen insights from users and you get Like.com. Like is a remarkable search experience - one where you use images to search for things. Here Riya’s CEO, Munjal Shah, explains what makes this search technology different than all others.

[…] January 21st, 2007 Like.com uses a visual search engine developed by Riya.com. It’s interesting that their first commercial application of visual search is an apparel and accessories shopping comparison site that shows matching results offered by etailers like Amazon, Raffaelo and SmartBargains. Raffaelo offers Italian designer products like Prada, Gucci and Fendi. You can find a few lower end brands like Tommy Hilfiger on Like.com, but not many. No eBay items are displayed despite Riya CEO Munjal Shah’s long history with eBay which began when he founded Andale, an auction management service. […]

Its a bit like image recognition where Munjal Shah says they have reached the limits of what could be achieved. After all, the best image recognition algorithms exist in the human brain. […]
