Photowalking #4: shooting Polaroid with Flickr’s Heather Champ
Heather Champ is one of our favorite photographers. Not only is she the community contact at Flickr, but she’s the co-founder of JPG Magazine. Here Thomas Hawk and I follow her around as she shows off how she makes unique images with Polaroid cameras. Neat stuff, although who knew we’d have an analog camera on Photowalking? Not me. Unfortunately we were having some problems with Heather’s microphone, sorry for the occasional pops.

Scoble,
Are you monitoring your incoming sound at all? Heather kept hitting the mic and you didn’t correct the problem so she continued to do it.
Makes for a difficult viewing experience.

I wasn’t on this one and learned a harsh lesson. It wasn’t her fault. The microphone was in the process of dying. I’m very sorry about that.

Very enjoyable Robert, gutted I missed you all in London. SF has so many fantastic places to shoot!

Good stuff, but it would be better if you and Thomas talked over your guest less and let her talk more.
Keep the photowalks coming!

Interesting. Good to see Tom.
I think Heather has done a tremendous job at Flickr.
Although I don’t share her photographic aesthetic nor Flickr’s non elastic view of photography I do appreciate that it is an informed view.
I think that having someone as in tune with a segment of photography and the distributive nature of the media has had a positive impact on how I expierence the site.
This clip has a “throw back” feel to it like those Mutual of Omaha Wild Kingdom shows with Marlin Perkins and Jim Fowlwer wven with the audio problems.

Another great show. I think these are great - and you have a kind sponsor! Keep up the great work!

I enjoyed watching this, have been following Heather’s photos for a while. It would have been nice to see Heather in an unfamiliar place actually taking photographs, but it was still delightful to see her work alive on video!

[…] I’ve always liked the idea of taking a picture of the same place over time. I joined the photo a week flickr group ages ago but haven’t posted any pictures yet. In her photowalking episode, Heather Champ talked about some of her favorite spots in the garden and the way they looked at different times of the year. In particular, she pointed out a section with a statue in the background and talked about using depth of field. […]

[…] JPG Magazine kicks out founders? Wow, I know Derek Powazek and Heather Champ, co-founders of JPG magazine, and they are writing a story of corporate intrigue on a small startup scale. Truth is that many startups kick their founders out. Heather was even on my show. It makes me sad, though. I liked JPG and certainly could see the love that both Derek and Heather had for it everytime we met. Both of them are great people who I’d love to do things with in the future.
