Exclusive lunch with Robert Scoble and Bill Gates
This is probably Microsoft’s biggest CES ever with Windows Vista shipping in a few days and Bill Gates met with bloggers from Engadget, Gizmodo, Kotaku, PodTech.net, and Joystiq for a wide-ranging interview about everything from Bill’s speeding tickets to software that’ll take full advantage of multi-core processors.
Bill Gates keynote and other info are up on the Microsoft at CES site.

This is the most relaxed I’ve ever seen Gates, who to me often comes off as trying to avoid risking a misstep. I think his new “soon to be retired” mode suits him well… no longer has to pretend to be on top of every product roll-out schedule, can focus on really big “philosophical” outlooks etc.
Same reaction to the short CNet interview where he came across more as an end user than company Chairman.
Also, nice that I can finally play your videos with one click on a Linux machine. (I’m downloading the On10 video in the background which will need some diddling no doubt to play.)

well done. i liked it and was good listening to bill being interviewed and getting his views. as one of the worlds most influential person it was good not to see people trying to put him on the spot and get one over on microsoft.

[…] Chris Grant of Joystiq (he’s the handsome lad pictured above), along with Engadget’s Ryan Block as well as folks from Kotaku, Gizmodo, and ScobleShow, sat down with Bill Gates at CES yesterday to talk about, well, everything. The group covers issues like net neutrality, vertical integration, and of course, the xbox 360. On the 360 side of things, Bill evokes memories of the 1990s as he declares the 360 as controlling people’s living rooms. With the introduction of IPTV, it would seem that the 360 has finally become the “set top box” holy grail that was sought after in the last decade of the 20th century. Gates also reveals that the majority of Microsoft’s often touted 5 million xbox Live subscribers are of the Gold variety. Other topics discussed include digital distribution, Microsoft’s future, and why the 360 will have a larger downloadable library than the PC. Bill Gates on net neutrality…
Gates gives an interview where he lays out the stakes of the net neutrality debate. This is interesting because Microsoft has businesses in both content and infrastructure….

Kwiat: a second camera is not possible in these situations. I didn’t even know I would be able to get Christopher Coulter in to run camera until just a few minutes before the interview started (I thought I’d have to run camera).
Rob: that’s a $900 Sennheiser shotgun microphone you’re listening to. They weren’t an afterthought. It’s very hard to microphone something when you have no idea ahead of time what will happen (and, when, you just can’t get a group of people mic’ed beforehand).
I’ve listened to it, though. Get some amplified speakers. It’ll cost you $20. If you have such speakers you’ll be able to hear.

Price of the mike won’t help you at all, if the mike is too far from the source of the sound. Much better getting a $5 tie-neck mike on the suit, than a 1600$ Sennheiser on the other side of the hall. Even better: get a wireless quality tie-mike and you are sure to get good quality. Bill wouldn’t have minded, and all of you would have gotten good sound.
That said, a lot could still be fixed in post. You don’t need your audience to buy new speakers, just boost the sound prior to posting the video. Or use some sound cleaning, like soundsoap, to clean it a bit.
And as far as camera goes, I would at the very least switch off the auto exposure, and get a good exposure on the face, and then leave it there.
Not meaning to come across as this critical dude, just some thoughts on how to improve the audience’s experience. (Hey, this was an interview with the world’s richest guy. Radio Shack just wont do.)
