Intel says goodbye to Silicon Dioxide in new 45 nanometer fab
Moore’s Law is very much alive, according to Intel Senior Fellow, Mark Bohr. He gave me a tour of Intel’s newest 45 nanometer fab. This is a very rare look inside Intel’s newest fab that’ll make processors you’ll be buying in computers later this year. In this tour you’ll see workers putting on their “bunny suits”, hear why cleanliness is so important, and hear what these new chips will do. Mark claims this fab puts Intel one to two years ahead of its competitors. Why is that? Because they are getting rid of Silicon Dioxide dielectrics. What does that mean? Well, watch the video and you’ll see the secret to Intel’s new 45 nanometer chips. Wikipedia, has a good page on High-K dielectrics, which is what Intel s moving to, in order to make processors generate less heat, take less power, all while having more transistors than last year’s designs. Intel has the world’s first High-K metal gate architecture and it’s all due to this fab. Thanks to Intel for giving me a great look behind the scenes here. What does this mean for you? These chips will bring you about 20 percent more performance.

[…] Have held back on posting on this one, though it couldn’t be much more relevant to what we’re up to with EPSON right now. VPN was playing up when I might have responded in more timely fashion. Gotta love VPN. But I don’t know, it’s only almost become interesting now – it breaking at the weekend. Robert Scoble, you might remember, was the blogger who, having humanised Microsoft, co-wrote the book and took the consultancy shilling. Now he’s at a podcasting specialist, Podtech, making videos I described in one of the dummy posts to this blog, The longtail cowboys. It’s a nasty little spiteful effort, that post, but then I was writing for webdesigners. (Hello Netcel, Ben and Romulus Ike, thanks for getting the ‘licks here.) Scoble still blogs, and on Saturday complained that the big gadget sites, such as Engadget and Gizmodo, hadn’t linked to his latest Podtech podcast, despite it featuring (in his own words) ‘the scoop of the freakin’ century’. In fact, he began by complaining that these big gadget blogs, which have the status, audience and influence of MSM, didn’t link to any blogs, though he withdrew this allegation in a series of updates that followed the original post. The scoop of the century, it turns out, was a 40-minute video tour of Intel’s new 45nm chip factory. Engadget had news of the new chips, and said the editor responsible for the piece, a certain Paul Miller, didn’t feel Scoble’s material offered anything new. Scoble’s video scooped Engadget’s post by 30 minutes, though it’s possible that the New York Times scooped both of them. Ho hum. There is, as you might imagine, a gossip blog centred on Silicon Valley, and it’s called Valleywag. At least, the tech bloggers (including the Valleywag staff) call it a gossip site – but it’s actually as much a voice for tech dissenters. On Monday Valleywag accused Scoble of producing content paid for by Intel without disclosure, an almost unforgivable sin in the blogosphere. Scoble denied it, while acknowledging that his company had indeed received sponsorship money from Intel. Unsurprisingly, that hardly ended the debate, which has also heard Scoble insist that: “Having cancer is important for THAT ONE PERSON. Intel chips change the lives of hundreds of millions”. Beautiful though that final sentiment may be, it’s arguably true. I’m starting to feel like that bloke with the megaphone who hangs around Oxford Circus, but I firmly believe that technology is going to zzzz… Well, I think you all know where I stand on the tech/human evolution thing. Great job Intel! Now, if only the graphics card manufacturers would only follow suit with similar innovative thinking, perhaps, we the consumer would not need worry about standing by with fire extinguisher in hand, or strategize on how to implement ice-berg driven cooling mechanisms, each time we boot up!
