CERN Tour: Beginnings of the Web

Ben Segal and Jean-Francois Groff give me a tour around CERN where we get a look at the computer that hosted the first Web service, visit Tim Berners-Lee’s office (the door was locked, unfortunately, but it’s still fun), and get a look at CERN’s computer center. Oh, don’t know who Ben is? Look his name up on Google. He pushed CERN to choose TCP/IP, which laid the groundwork for the Web to be invented there. Hear his stories about the early days of the Web and about the fantastic new machine at CERN that’ll look into the first billionths of seconds after the big bang.

Can I go into CERN too? Lovely looking at CERN atleast in second hand view.

  5. Yanko Says:

That was great. I enjoyed it. Thanks, Robert. I’m left wondering what kind of experimental data they are still processing since all of the Standard Model has been confirmed, except for the Higgs boson, which they cannot produce in this collider anyways? What are they hoping to find?

  6. irelandshope Says:

Just wanted to say I really enjoyed the Cern Video. Keep it up, no one is doing such interesting stuff outside the echo chamber.

  7. Robert Scoble Says:

Yanko: there was a talk at CERN that I’ll link to as soon as it is up that explains all this.

    Thanks Irelandshope!

[…] Why? Committees and not invented here syndrome. If you talk with 10 random smart people about an idea, at least one of them will say it’s impossible. I want you to watch the interview with Ben Segal at CERN again and again until you get this. He told me that if he had thought of doing Internet search back in 1992, he would have dismissed the idea of “impossible.” […]

At first I thought, “Who the heck would sit and watch an entire hour of ANYTHING on the web?” Then I started watching this and couldn’t stop.

I have some recommendations for your camera person, however. :-)

Maybe I’ll just keep them to myself.

Great video, Scoble. This is definitely a classic. It’s amazing how much has happened in such a short period of time since the 80’s. Thanks!

I was handholding this with a monopod.
